LEADING WITH VISION
Meet Amie Carter, Ed.D., the Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools. As the first woman, and the first known LGBTQ+ person to hold this elected position, her vision centers on ensuring schools are places where every learner is physically and emotionally safe and where every learner has equitable access to high-quality education.
A longtime Petaluma resident, Dr. Carter brings decades of leadership experience, having served as Assistant Superintendent for both the Marin County Office of Education and Novato Unified School District, as well as Principal at Rancho Cotate High School and Thomas Page Academy. A former high school English teacher and language acquisition instructor, she is deeply committed to educational excellence and innovation.
SERVING WITH HEART
Dr. Carter leads with a spirit of collaboration, building strong partnerships across communities, schools, and families to create lasting, positive change. She knows that real progress happens when diverse voices come together with shared purpose. Through her commitment to safety, access, and opportunity, she works every day to strengthen Sonoma County’s schools and empower the next generation to succeed and lead.
"Children are at the center of everything I do. Every policy, every initiative, every decision must ask first: "Is this best for our kids?" I believe that when we lift up our children — academically, emotionally, and socially — we are investing in a brighter future for all. My mission is to ensure that every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to reach their fullest potential."
My motivation to serve children comes from a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility. I’ve seen how education transforms lives — my own and those of the students and families I’ve served. I know the hopes parents carry for their children, because I share those same hopes: that each child will be seen, valued, and given the chance to succeed. That belief, shaped by my family’s example of hard work and compassion, is what keeps me fighting for every student in Sonoma county.
